Tokyo Hy-Power HC-400L Antenna Tuner – Tokyo-Hy Power Model HC-400L manual (“old school” ) antenna tuner. In satisfactory cosmetic & superior working condition. This is a tremendous tuner. Among the features I value: top notch construction & components; smooth vernier drives for the capacitance tuning; tapped inductor with switch positions for the WARC as well as the historic ham bands; a one off meter with both forward power & SWR shown simultaneously & in the same orientation (i.e., not cross-needle); 3 selectable SO-259 antenna connections, plus provision for a random wire or balanced line (but no balun); & attractive design. I am including a photocopy of the manual, although I must say that Tokyo Hy-Power did a much better job on the tuner than on the manual . The model number implies that this is a 400 watt tuner, & the manual (at least my copy) has inconsistent & some clearly wrong statements approximately this & other things. The unit itself has meter switch settings of 500 & 50 watts (in addition to SWR/relative forward), & the meter indeed goes up to 500 watts. The construction & components certainly seem capable of 500 watts, although I’ve never put that much power into it. FWIW, I have compared this unit against a Bird 43 watt meter, & it is pretty darned accurate, at least up to 150 watts. There is an internal dummy load. The manual says it is rated for 50 watts for 30 seconds. Based on visual inspection of the components & study of the schematic, I think that this is probably accurate — in fact, it may be a bit optimistic, yet that should be sufficient to tune up a “fire bottle” exciter. Also, with multiple SO-259 connectors on the rear panel, selectable from the front, it would be a simple matter to keep a heftier dummy load at hand if needed. I have used several manual tuners over the years, & this 1 is my absolute favorite. I am selling it now because I am downsizing to mostly smaller & QRP equipment. As a testimony to Tokyo Hy-Power, however, I am replacing this with the lower power model of similar vintage (the HC-200L). If you have a 100 to 250 watt HF radio that is too old to play with those new-fangled auto-tuners , I can’t recommend the HC-400L highly enough. GL & 73 de KY3R, Bob. Posted with eBay Mobile
